Too Strange Even for The Movies

The arrests of ultranationalist Ergenekon “deep state” conspirators continue and new details are coming out. The link below gives a very clear and comprehensive account of who and what is involved. It has emerged that some of these people belong to anti-Christian “churches” whose only congregation is the Turkish secret service, MIT. And, mysteriously, it appears some of the ultranationalist plotters are members of the Church of Scientology. Note also Ergenekon’s seemingly incongruous “use” of members of a radical wing of the PKK (the Kurdish separatist organization AGAINST which the Turkish military is fighting a war) to plan to blow up a bridge near Turkish military headquarters. Why? In order to create chaos opening the way (and providing the excuse for) a military coup against the elected government in 2009. In case you think this is too convoluted to be true, remember that in the 1980s and 1990s, the “deep state” (believed to be linked to the deeply secular security forces) “used” a radical Islamic organization, Turkish Hizbullah, to eradicate Kurdish leaders, intellectuals and other “enemies of the state”. Hizbullah eventually got out of hand and became so brutal it too had to be rooted out.

This is a country rife with conspiracy theories, some of which sound wacko to an American who wouldn’t believe this stuff even in the movies. But remember, just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean no one is out to get you. Everything is possible. There are probably ten movie scripts in this news article alone. But if I tried to present Ergenekon to my publisher as a plot outline for a novel, I’d be shown the door.

Truth is more complicated than fiction.
