First Woman to Chair Bank Board of Directors
Suzan Sabanci Dinçer has been elected chairman of the Board of Directors of Turkey’s largest private sector bank, Akbank, replacing her father, Erol Sabanci. She is the first woman in Turkey to hold this position at a bank. Akbank is owned by Sabanci Holding. In an interview with Bloomberg Markets, the 43-year-old Ms. Sabanci Dinçer said she had started to visit the main office of her family’s bank at the age of eight during summer vacations. She befriended the executive officer at the time, Medeni Berk, who would give her math problems and explain the role of math in banking. Sabanci Dinçer: “I’d carry his files and do the homework he gave me, and he’d reward me with chocolates.” (Click here for Bloomberg interview.) (Click here for news article, in Turkish)
