Ergenekon Indictment Filed

Chief Prosecutor Aykut Cengiz Engin filed the long-awaited indictment against the Ergenekon suspects at an Istanbul court today. It is 2455 pages long. Engin held a press conference (click here for press conference text in English). The charges are listed in general (forming an armed group, attempting to overthrow the government, etc.). There are 86 suspects, 48 of them under arrest. A new wrinkle is that there are a large number of secret witnesses, identified in the indictment by number or code name. Their names are being kept secret for fear of reprisal.

  1. Good. Finally!

I hope the charges, especialy the ones against journalists, are sound and will hold water in the court of law.
