Kemalist Terrorists

Turkey Meets “Kemalist Terror” , by Mustafa Akyol. (click here)

[Last week], we heard at least a summary of the indictment in the Ergenekon case from Istanbul’s chief prosecutor, Aykut Cengiz Engin. Among the many striking things he noted, one was very new to Turkey. He said that Ergenekon was a “terrorist organization” that “used the ideologies of Kemalism, Atatürkism.”

Yes, this is new to Turkey, because we Turks never faced terrorism in the name of Kemalism before.

One Response to “Kemalist Terrorists”

  1. Huh? Factions of the Turkish militant left most certainly used Ataturk’s name in the late 60s and early 70s. Even the controversial Bursa speech was widely used at the time. (If you doubt any of this google for “Mustafa Kemal yuruyusu Deniz Gezmis” as an example.)

Also note that the MHP is missing from the his ever-so-informative summary of past terror. The MHP, too, paid lip service to Ataturk at times. The Turkish equivalent of Gladio for the pre-1980 years is being talked about now, and the MHP was very much involved in that period (see the Gladio link on the blog entry above).
