Come Back Tomorrow
No decision today from the Constitutional Court about closing the ruling AK Party. The court will continue deliberating tomorrow.
Sunday Evening President Gul and Prime Minister Erdogan held a secret 5-hour meeting in which they discussed recent events, but also what they would do if the court closes the party and bans them and 69 other politicians from joining a political party for 5 years. It is expected that these MPs and Erdogan would then become independents in parliament (the president would continue in office) and early elections would be called. The remaining AKP politicians would form a new party. It is expected that Erdogan would again become prime minister, but as an independent. However, rival parties have begun to appear that may split the present AKP power base and make it more difficult to deal with reforms and other pressing issues. For instance, Deputy Prime Minister Abdüllatif Sener has said he would like to establish a new political party.
