Ergenekon Dragnet Captures Active Military Officers

Nineteen people, including … five lieutenants and [a] military student, were detained on Thursday in police operations… as part of an investigation into Ergenekon, a neo-nationalist gang believed to be the extension of a clandestine network of groups with members in the armed forces that planned to overthrow the government…

Land Forces Lt. Mehmet Ali C.; Levent Temiz, a former chairman of the ultranationalist youth clubs affiliated with the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) known as Ülkü Ocaklari; actress Nurseli Idiz and Seyhan Soylu (known as Sisi), a transsexual believed to have organized a scheme that led up to a political scandal ahead of a non-armed military intervention in 1997, were also taken into police custody.

Initial reports yesterday suggested that information from those interrogated so far has given the police reason to suspect that Ergenekon was behind a deadly armed attack on the US Consulate General in Istanbul in July of this year….

The prosecution, which knew at the time of frequent meetings and phone conversation between … three suspects arrested on July 1 and military academy students as well as young officers in the military, was investigating whether Kemal, Aydin and Özoglu were trying to organize a group against the government in the military.
