Strut and Strife on Second Day of Ergenekon Trial
The court met for the second day to consider the Ergenekon case (see blog entry below for description of Ergenekon; for a brief English introduction to the trial, click here.) after a chaotic Day 1 in a courtroom much too small to accommodate the many dozens of accused, witnesses, journalists and spectators. Today, under heightened security and a greatly reduced media presence, the accused were officially identified, and their lawyers mostly negotiated, strutted, and sounded off. …Suspect Ibrahim Benli, who has been released though he still faces charges of membership in the criminal network, attempted to enter the courtroom, saying, “I want to hear who testifies in what way…. I am being accused of hosting a dinner on Dec. 9, 2007 in my house in Çatalca attended by Do?u Perinçek, Güler Kömürcü and Kemal Alemdaro?lu. In that meeting, Perinçek sang folk songs. Tolga Yarman played the piano. They called this a ‘clandestine meeting.’ They said I was providing ‘armed training.’ The only thing I did was cook kebabs.”…
